Now that June is finished I have some time to breathe, relax, and reflect on everything this past season brought. 2013-2014 was an exciting step forward in my musical career.
This past season I had my debut with Opera Colorado in their production of Carmen as Moralés. It was such an incredible opportunity for me – performing at a top-tier company alongside some of the most thrilling voices in opera. I was humbled to share the stage with Sandra Piques Eddy, Adam Klein, Janai Brugger, Ryan Kuster, and the incredibly talented Opera Colorado Young Artists. I also had the pleasure of working with Maestro Robert Wood and director Kathleen Belcher.
Last fall I had my first opportunity to perform in a musical. I have always had an appreciation for music theatre and a desire to perform in a musical and after encouragement from my wife and some friends in the business I auditioned and was cast in the Arvada Center’s production of Camelot. I performed in the ensemble and was the understudy for the lead role of Lancelot. This was an ideal situation for me as I was able to learn the ropes in the ensemble while still working on a role. The most amazing part of it was that I was called on several occasions to perform as Lancelot! I hope that musicals will continue to be a part of my performing career!
I continued gaining experience as a music director with the Wolf Theatre Academy in Denver. Last summer I was music director for Man of La Mancha. I continued in the fall with Sweeney Todd and returned this summer for Annie Get Your Gun. I have greatly enjoyed working with the creative team, production staff, and administration at the Wolf but I have most enjoyed working with the incredibly talented students! The Wolf has a long history of successful productions and consistently holds their students to a high artistic standard.
The Next Step
At this point I do not have many things scheduled for next season. I am planning to audition for a number of summer festival young artist programs. I have received a lot of encouragement this past year and am aiming higher than I have in the past. I’m preparing my materials and arias and will make several trips this fall for auditions. We will see what comes of it but as always I am eager and excited for whatever the next step may be!
